Bleek outlook for area farmers
Got myself dressed and ready for one of my favorite summertime activities... farmer's market. You could quickly read the measure of concern on the faces of the vendors... drought. The soaring temperatures and weeks... heck months without rain has taken its toll. Not only are our lawns a golden shade of hay - the usually abundant, richly delicious, and fabulously robust selection of vegetables has the appearance of an anorexic teenager. Leaves wilted with brown spots, anemic in taste and color, small... and in some cases absent all together. All the vendors can do is shrug an apologetically stay, "I'm sorry... we're having a tough year." Why are they apologizing - they can't control the rain. I'm worried though as to the impact on a larger level, mostly economically for our state. We balance so unsteadily on the point of knife, and with business after business laying off people, I fear this will become a repeat of the "dust-bowl" and subsequent depression of the 30's. Well, if our grand-parents could get through it - by God so will we! (I draw the line at saving soup can labels to send through my printer to print my supermarket coupons though... LOL!)
